Thailand is pretty much the tourist destination of South-East Asia. Fair enough. I mean, look at this:
So did you know there’s what Wikipedia calls an ‘ethnic separatist insurgency’ going on in South Thailand? The NZ and Australian Governments both advise their citizens not to visit the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and Songkhla unless it’s absolutely essential.
The insurgency is supposedly aimed at achieving independence of the mostly Malay Muslim provinces from Thailand. It has a very limited chance of success. On the other hand, the Thai government has made no progress in curbing the violence since it first began in 2001. The number of deaths is now estimated at more than 6,000.
Just goes to show what you don’t hear about on the news…
